- Description
- The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the feasibility of a group singing program for post stroke rehabilitation, given the growing popularity of music and singing therapies in this area. A mixed methods, waitlist control (crossover) study was conducted between November 2012 and May 2013 in Newcastle, Australia and involved 38 stroke survivors with and without aphasia who received a 12-week group singing intervention. In assessing feasibility, an appraisal of outcome measures was made to inform any future evaluation of effectiveness and best methods for running the intervention was also explored, so developing an implementation manual to catalogue the same. Secondary aims included an investigation of potential impact on well-being, quality of life, depression and social participation, and for people with aphasia, whether the group singing improved their communication. A qualitative exploration of the stroke survivor’s personal experience of the was also conducted to explore the participants’ perspective. Findings indicated that a group singing activity is a feasible intervention for community dwelling stroke survivors with and without aphasia. Critique of the research design indicated the need for further evaluation of the outcome measures and methodology used before approaching a more definitive trial. Implications for further research and significance for the wider stroke population are discussed.
